Dirty Contacts:

Probably the most common problem with older Marantz receivers is corrosion on switch and potentiometer contacts. Often a scratchy sound is heard through the speakers when the volume knob is turned. This is indicative of corrosion on the carbon potentiometer surface and/or slip contacts within the potentiometer (often called 'pot') itself. Usually a cleaning with a quality, approved cleaner will eliminate the scratchy sound and will restore the lubricants to protect the contacts.
