Dirty Relay Contacts:
Another common problem with older Marantz receivers is corrosion on speaker protection relay contacts. Often a scratchy sound is heard through the speakers and cleaning the switches and pots doesn't fix it. Usually cleaning the speaker protection relay contacts with a quality, approved cleaner will eliminate the scratchy sound. I recommend disassembling the relay and gently cleaning the contacts by hand using a lint free cloth or Q-tip. Simply spraying into the relay is not recommended, since it doesn't remove the stubborn carbon deposits. Also, I wouldn't use anything abrasive since these relays have coated contacts. Once Properly cleaned however, the contacts will resist corrosion for years to come.
Of course, many of these relays are still available as new parts if the contacts have been burnished or have deteriorated to a point where the coating is no longer intact. Most of the 2XXX models use the OEM Omron LY2-0-DC24 Relay available through places like www.mouser.com
