Welcome to the New Year! Another month flyin' by! Meanwhile, I can't emphasize enough just how hard I'm trying to get caught up and reduce my wait times. I know many of you out there have waited over a year to get service. Believe me, this is my #1 concern. I've created a "Carreers" link on the index page and I am looking for any help that will get IRM to the next level: quicker service! I am giving away 1/2 of this business to anyone who can come on board as my new VP and help me!! That's right, you will own 1/2 of IRM!! If you live in the Lake Tahoe area or are within 100 miles, are dying to get out of the crazy rat-race of corporate life, or just looking to relocate somewhere nice. I even have accommodations available to house my new VP temporarily for relocation. Please contact me if you are interested in a career with IRM. I NEED YOU!

December 11, 2011

Closing out another year. Amazing how time flies. Gets me a bit nostalgic and so I've had some things on my mind I'd like to post today: Taking risks to follow your dreams. Nearly 5 years ago I began a journey to do something I had always dreamed about but never thought I could actually do. I started down a road to build a buisiness and make it the best; a business that would provide a great service and also give me work without layoffs for the life of my career. I started building up IRM while also working full time at AIM Controls, a small aerospace R&D company in Grass Valley, as I laid out my plans for this dream to be realized. I had started working for myself very early in my adult life with my first stereo repair business starting in 1986 next door to Alta Buena Stereo in Grass Valley. This is where I worked on my first Marantz (a 2325). The seed was planted. It was here that I met my wife of 20 years. She was working at the burger joint next door. The early days of IRM were the hardest with no seed money to build the biz and other work in the GV area drying up, it didn't take long for things to become very trying. And I believe that this led to the breakup of my marriage. Sometimes in life we are forced to make choices that test who we are and what we truly believe in. What value are our dreams if we don't take a chance on them in the one time we have on Earth to do them?

Happy Holidays everyone. Live, love and follow your dreams! Cheers! RB

SprintST on AK: Look, the best way to get this issue resolved is for you to skip a post on AK and spend those few seconds sending me an email instead. I want to take care of you immediately and directly as I've said below. I am unable to post to the AK site and am only able to read posts when someone links me to them--emailing me will be much more effective. So, PLEASE, help me help YOU! Email me and I can direct my attention your way. I have hundreds of customers, I would rather not guess at whom to send emails to. So, SprintST, click here and let's get you the service you have been waiting for, OK?. Cheers, RB

November 26th, 2011

Hey everyone! I hope the holiday is/was great! It's Saturday and I'm catching up on emails. Still no email from SprintST of AK. Meanwhile, I've posted the latest queue as promised--if a day or 2 late. Had a busy house this holiday.

**Sorry SprintST, my "mitigating factor" was Thanksgiving. I occasionally like to take a holiday off with my family, don't you? My son is moving away and this will be the last time I get to see him for what will likely be quite some time. Meanwhile, I hope everyone is staying safe and healthy! I'll be in touch. ;-) RB (referencing this thread on AK. I'm still not sure who you are, SprintST)

November 16th, 2011

SprintST at AK: Please email me so that I can address your situation/concerns directly and immediately. robert@irebuildmarantz.com I admit the past 2 years have not exactly been a walk in the park for me, but I'm now moving forward again strong and working VERY HARD at acheiving the 100% customer satisfaction I've always strived for--the whole purpose of my business. ;-) However, I can only help you if I know who you are and how to contact you.

Thanks, and I look forward to getting your email. RB

November 13th, 2011

Wow! These weeks are just flyin' by, guys, aren't they! Well, I figured I needed to get something posted here since it's been so long but I hadn't really thought of what to say. Luckily I was saved by one of my customers. I'll let him post for me today. (Thanks, Rich!)

"Robert, I am listening to my restored 2285B as I write this. Thank you. It was a beautiful piece of machinery when built, and now it works and is a beautiful piece of stereophonic history. Please include any or all of this note in your feedback section. I started to look for 1970's stereo equipment in 2008 to replace my Sansui Au-717/TU -717. I had always aspired to owning a Marantz receiver so purchased this 2285b on eBay. Of course when I received it, there was some intermittent problem with the right channel. I looked on line and found Robert. I read his feedback, emailed him, looked at his backlog, and happily sent in my deposit knowing I'd be waiting a couple of years for him to get to me. Shortly after that, I decided to purchase another Marantz in anticipation of my son's 16th birthday--he loves 60's-80's rock-and-roll. Yahooooooo!!! I didn't really know what to buy him so contacted Robert. He was great and reviewed a number of Marantz receivers for me before concluding that a 2230 would be best for my son. I purchased one and before I turned it on, placed another deposit with Robert. I looked at the cue, read his comments, realized it would be a couple of years, but paid the money happily just to reserve my spot. Since then, for anyone who has spent any time at all as part of Robert's cue, we all know Robert went through some ups and downs, mostly downs. Having said that, throughout all of this heartache, Robert has done his best to keep us informed and to keep his cue moving. I've never read a negative comment from anyone who has received his finished product back from Robert, and I am another very happy customer. Thank you. For those of you on the cue, still waiting, as Jimmy Buffet says, 'the pleasure is worth all the pain'. Stay the course, you'll be happy for a long time and the wait will disappear in your memory. For those of you who complain and want your deposit back, grow up. You read his policy, it is as clear as day. Pay your money, get in line and wait. That's it. Robert, you did a great job and I will recommend you to all I meet who share our passion for this type of stereo equipment. All the best, Rich" Richard McArdle--Chicago, IL 2385B, 2230 Full Restorations

Meanwhile, I'm plugging away at restorations and I promise to have an updated queue page by Turkey Day! Cheers! RB

September 28th, 2011

So now we are heading into fall. I'm sure you all can all feel it! I think I smell Thanksgiving and pumpkin pie just around the corner!! Meanwhile, the props are at full spin and we are getting back up to speed again. So many things, friends, but it's all good! Nothing like Marantz to soothe the savage beast, eh? I think surely Bob Marley was 100% correct: inject music and love into the lives of everyone and the problems melt away! Anyway, lots of parts coming in tomorrow (Thursday the 29th). I'll be finding happy little homes for them in your receivers as we move into October. So go out and have a Schnitzengruben and a fat mug of Octoberfest beer and I'll be here... Ok, now I gotta have one of those huge pretzels--lots of mustard please!! ;-)

September 19th, 2011

Hey everyone! I noticed the address at the bottom of this [ok, I'll use the word: "blog"] was incorrect. Thought I would update it. Meanwhile, I'm working on getting the queue back to accuracy. Hopefully it's at least starting to look better. Thanks everyone for the emails helping me to correct my mistakes. Keep 'em comin' if you see something wrong. Guess that's it for now...stay healthy! RB

September 12th, 2011

Whew! I shipped 5 completed restorations in the past 4 days, and the next restorations in queue are on deck and headed for my bench now. Thanks to everyone that has been patient, it really helps me in getting your prized Marantz equipment back in your hands. My end goal has always been that you get to enjoy the best possible sound from your vintage stereo, and the feedback on these restorations, as you all know, is what keeps me going. The issues that have slowed down my production have been resolved and IRM is back to pumping out restorations.

The feedback I've received regarding timeliness of communications, and firm expectations of ship dates has been heard loud and clear. I promise to give you, my valued customers, timely responses to your emails. In addition to your input, my business consultant (and fellow Marantz fan) has also pounded into me that great restoration work is not enough by itself and good communication is needed too. I know that, but it's easy to forget when buried in work.

Don't hesitate to email me about status of your restoration, and of course I love to hear about how your completed restoration looks and sounds to you! Cheers! RB

September 5th, 2011: The Queue:

I've got the queue back up, thinned out a bit. Please don't everyone attack me because it doesn't look like much has happened. I still have work to do on it. Meanwhile, I'm getting things back on track again. RB (A nod and thanks to Randy Shaw. Thanks Buddy.)

September 4th, 2011: IRM's Future

So, this page sort of turned out to be more of a blog then a monthy news page, didn't it!? Well, I'm going to be a bit harsh here for a minute because things are not going well here at IRM. As you can see from the previous post, there are some problems that I need to work on here (go read it, i'll wait). And please believe me when I say I've been really busting my ass to get things done. I know that a good part of the issue at hand is visibility. I get that. But the rumor mill over at AK and the resulting use of PayPal's dispute system is just about to put me out of business. Please note that I am not able to defend myself against the onslaught of rumor, hearsay, liable or slanderous comments there, nor can I even read it due to being banned from AK (for BS, BTW. See posts below)

I'm not rich, I don't have thousands of dollars of operating capital for IRM. This business runs on a shoestring--a very balanced one. Anyone that knows what I charge knows my prices are "too low". I chose this so that everyone can afford to get their gear restored. I haven't changed my prices since I started this business. My parts costs have done nothing but go up and so the hours of labor on the invoice go down to accommodate--to keep my cost to you the same. I'm not makng much, guys. So when someone suddenly decides to pull the rug out from under me as is being done at the moment, I find it difficult not only to physically operate this business, but the desire to run it is beginning to wane.

I started this business because people came to me and asked me to. I've done my best to accommodate everyone and I've essentially thrown away my personal life to do so. Don't get me wrong, I love doing this work. I love everything about Marantz, the sound and what it stands for. But I can't and won't be backstabbed and pushed around in my business. With a negative balance at PayPal right now due to the issue below, and another person who just initiated a complaint after reading posts at AK, I can tell you right now, IRM is hanging on a thread. It's hard enough for me to wear all the 50 hats I have to just to make this biz run, I don't need any help making it harder. So, I'm leaving things in the hands of my customers. YOU decide if I stay in business or if I close down. This is a really, really sad day for me... hmmm just 3 days from what will be a year... sigh RB

September 2nd, 2011: On PayPal Disputes...

Hey everyone, I hate to go on a negative note here, but I seriously need to ask a huge favor from all my customers. Please, PLEASE, PLEASE don't initiate item not received disputes on PayPal. I know I'm way behind and I've been working until 2am virtually every night trying to get caught up. The problem is that when you initiate a complaint on PayPal, it immediately puts a hold on the funds I need to operate this business, order parts, and ultimately ship your gear back. Trust me, it won't speed me up. Actually it throws a HUGE monkey wrench into my system.

A customer has just now started one of these complaints without even giving me a chance to talk about it via email (I need at least 24 hours to respond via email, people!). So essentially the customer has now locked out the funds I need to use to ship his gear. The "unforseen circumstances" below (8/21) was another PayPal dispute that caused a $1500 parts order to bounce. Now everyone will have to wait even longer due to that. So, you see? Please HELP me to get my restorations out, not hinder me, OK, guys? I'm bustin' a nut right now... EMAIL me before you do anything like this, ok? I know we can work something out that will be more beneficial to both of us.

Meanwhile, I have some other related news. One of my customers has volunteered to come work for me next week to help me get caught up on stuff. Hooray!! I'm really looking forward to having him here!! So much to do....

Ok, now go have a nice holiday! I'll be working through it... Cheers! RB

August 25th, 2011: Dad

Been a bit distracted this week with company here. My sister and her two kids have come up this week to visit and so that we could spread Dad's ashes. We all hiked up to the top of a ridge that Dad loved and we spread his ashes among the wildflowers there. We had a nice moment there and I think we all got the closure we needed. Now I'm sore from the hike. LOL Anyway, I'm firing up the boilers again and back to full steam on IRM restorations. I know a few of you are waiting for shipping, so that's my priority today and tomorrow. I'm on it! Thanks for hangin' in there for me! ;-)

August 21st, 2011

Wow, a month has almost gone by already! Well, I ended up not going on my trip north at the last minute. I figured it was just too much driving and too little R&R time. I ended up working through that weekend (what else is new?). I will have to plan a more extensive trip/time off at some point in the future hopefully before the winter gets here. Meanwhile, I'm plugging away at restorations and getting kits out and trying to keep up on emails. I have one issue with a large parts order that will be a bit late due to unforseen circumstances but I will do my best to reduce the effect of its tardiness. Oh, and I've found a new supplier for my LEDs which will hopefully eliminate the major bottleneck I've been experiencing with my previous supplier. This is probabaly the best news for IRM in a long time! I guess that's it for now. I hope everyone is soaking up this amazing summer! There are only so many of these perfect ones in our lifetimes! Cheers! RB

July 29th, 2011

I hope everyone is enjoying the summer! On that note, I need to ask a favor of all of my customers: I'm in desperate need of taking off for a few days, so I will be out of the office over the next weekend and first part of next week (8/5-8/9 inclusive). I'm starting to look like Jack Nicolson from the Shining! So my son and I will be heading up to Washington to my cousin's yearly shin-dig, "Day on the Deck" for some MUCH NEEDED R&R. I shall return with a fresh set of bright eyes and a new bushiness to my tail! Meanwhile, this coming week I will be pushing to get out all outstanding kits and paid restorations. Cheers! RB

July 27th: Kimber!!

How's it going everyone! Good news! Kimber has authorized me to have their logos and links on my site! I must be doing something right! Of all the companies I would want connections to, Kimber is definitely at the top of the list. If you aren't familiar with Kimber or with their amazing products, please click this link to learn more. There is nothing that makes me lose sleep more than knowing someone out there has a restored Marantz and not using the best speaker cables available! ;-0

July 21st: The Car!

UGH! Car trouble!! I've been under the car for the last 2 days fixing a major problem. But it's all done (oh man am I sore!!) so back to biz! So if you are wondering where the hell your receiver or restoration kit is, it's in my back seat! I'm going to be doing nothing but packing and shipping today and tomorrow so stand by for shipping/tracking info--it's just around the corner. ;-) RB

July 18th:

HUGE shipping week this week. If you are waiting for something from me, likely it will go out this week. Meanwhile, I've been "burning the midnight oil" working late to get caught up on restorations. To everyone who's getting tired of waiting, hang in there, I'm not far behind ya! Thanks for the patience, awesome emails, well wishes and great positivie energy from everyone! I'll be in touch... Cheers! RB

July 15th, 2011:

Hi all. Ended up being out of the office for most of this week spending some very much needed time with my son before he heads off to college [cry]. So I must apologize for not getting much communication out. I have a ton of emails to catch up on, so please be patient and I'll get back to ya ASAP. I have also finally gotten a Blackberry, so I shall endeavor to reduce email return time in the future (as I figure out how to use the damn thing)...

Cheers! RB

July 12th, 2011:

Hey everyone! I hope everyone is enjoying this fine summer! Meanwhile, I've got to take off today as it is my son's 18th birthday (God, I'm feeling old!!). I have a lot of stuff in my shipping queue that I will endeavor to get out the door this week. Thanks everyone for being so patient with me!! I'll be back in the office tomorrow. Cheers! RB

June 30th, 2011: Independence Day Weekend!

Happy Birthday America! I hope everyone has an absolutely fantastic weekend! And a special thanks to everyone who has served in our armed forces and those out there fighting for our freedom right now... ~RB

June 19th, 2011: Happy Fathers' Day!

Well, now that all that unnecessary drama with AK is over... Just wanted to drop a note to say Happy Fathers' Day to everyone. Meanwhile, I have to be out of the office for most of this week. I'll do my best to stay in touch with everyone and I'll be shipping out completed jobs when I can. Sorry for any inconvenience this might cause (mom has to go in for surgery. Apparenly it's her turn!).

And thanks to everyone who sent in moral support with regard to AK. You guys are the best (you know who you are)!

I'll be in touch... Cheers! RB

June 14th, 2011: Banned from AK!

Well, I thought I would add a couple thoughts with regard to Audio Karma: First of all, the site boasts its Org status, but you may notice them constantly pushing AK's techs on you whenever you post about repairs or restorations. As it turns out, "Only paying vendors are permitted to promote their webpage business sites on AK.", according to Ernie Burke, Administrator of AK.

So right there, not much of an unbiased, Org is it?. AK is just another dot com and I'm competition. So naturally they have to paint me in a bad light to promote their own...

I also wanted to point out that there was no warning for me, just banned for life. They even blocked me from read-only viewing of the site by banning my IP address as well. Something is wrong with this if you ask me. What are they afraid of? At any rate, I won't be endorsing them or their site any longer. Their actions are not of a Org site where information exchange is the purpose. I feel sorry for the many cool people that are on that site who think they are getting unbiased info. As you all know, I don't push business on anyone. Emails and questions are answered without bias and without the sales pitch...

Bad Karma for Audio Karma... ;-(

Comments are always welcome HERE ... I'm not afraid to talk about stuff... RB

June 13th, 2011 Update below

Well, the PayPal issue has been resloved and I'm endeavoring to get the queue back on track. Been catching up on repairs and warrantee work and thngs have not gone as smoothly as I would have liked. Seems many of these restorations just fight me all the way--some take several times as long to do as typical. But no worries, we will get there.

Meanwhile, I'm apparently back in the hot water again (on AK) for being slow to get restorations done. I can certainly understand the waiting just plain sucks. I get it. I don't know if I could last very long without my 2225 daily listener. But I assure you all once again, your money, Marantz gear, and trust are well placed here. In engineering we used to say, "Fast, Inexpensive, or Hi-quality; Pick 2 of the 3". I chose to keep prices low and give the best quality I can. (many parts have doubled in cost yet I have never raised my prices). So, I can't do it fast enough for some people. "You can't please all the people all the time". For that, I am truly sorry and all I can say is please try to hang on a little longer. I WILL get to you and your restoration as soon as I can. It's inevitable.... it WILL be worth the wait.

(Meanwhile, once again I have to mention that there are no deposit refunds for any deposits taken after 4/2009. This is the rule, and you all know and agree to this before signing up. It's up TO YOU to decide to do business with me. Being patient will bring back rewards in spades. Many of you already know this..)

P.S. I also might point out that I've been working IRM for 7 years now, NON-STOP save for emergencies, 3 moves and my Dad dying. I HAVE NOT HAD ANY VACATION time to myself since I started the biz. I get 30 to 70 emails EVERY DAY and I try to answer each and every one. This is seven days a week, every week, every month. So when people infer that I'm not doing everything I can to get work out, once again, I get a little defensive....

well, anyway... I'll be in touch... Have a fun enjoying the great weather!! ~RB

Update: 10:35pm: Well, apparently I have now been banned from Audio Karma. LOL. I guess they want to be able to flame me without any sort of response. What a shame. They say:

You have been banned for the following reason:
multiple accounts, unauthorized marketing on AK

Date the ban will be lifted: Never

And then this after I deleted my cookies:
vBulletin Message
Sorry. The administrator has banned your IP address. To contact the administrator click here

Wow! I guess I hit a nerve or something. I must have REALLY SCARED THEM!! LOL. I am a pretty scary guy! ;-) Well, I'm just trying to let people know what's up. BTW, I don't market on AK AT ALL!! Never have, not once! And all you hear about on their posts is this person who restores and is on AK, or that person... Nor do I have multiple accounts. Are you serious? I barely have time to visit AK much less have multiple accounts. Really? So you be the judge here.... Meanwhile, shipped out 2 restorations today....

Cheers all! RB

unbelievable... just so amazingly childish... so I guess the witch hunt will have to happen behind my back now.... let me know how the show goes. ;-)

June 1st, 2011

Hello everyone! I hope you all had a nice Memorial Day weekend! Meanwhile, I have some rather unfortunate news. Thanks to our wonderful Federal Government, PayPal is now required to demand additional information on business accounts, my account included. Since I use my PayPal debit card exclusively for the business (shipping, parts ordering, etc.), this is translating into a possible 3 week wait for me to receive my new PayPal debit card. Believe me, nobody is more pissed off about this than I am, since as of today I'm completely dead in the water waiting for PayPal to approve my card. Considering I've been with them for over 10 years... ;-0

All I can say is I'm super sorry for the inconvenience and added wait times, especially for people that have already paid for their restorations and shipping fees. Please email me if you need more info or want to add to my venting. Meanwhile, I will do my best to get this issue resolved as soon as humanly possible. Thanks for the understanding and hang in there, we'll get this... grrrrrrr

May 14th, 2011

Hello all! Been an interesting few weeks. As I write this, the [hopefully] last snow storm of the season is setting in (Mom calls it the "flower flattener"). Meanwhile, I've had to be out of the office for a bit as my son had to go under the knife for some semi-emergency surgery. All is good now (thank God!) so back to biz! I hope all of you out there stay healthy. (Listening to Marantz certainly can't hurt!) ;-)

Again, thanks SO much for the awesome feedback from all you great Marantz people out there! Honestly, I wish I knew how even begin to show my appreciation to you all for the support! I love the emails and great restoration stories! Please keep 'em coming!! ;-)

Oh, and watch for some amazing changes (and VERY serious improvements) in IRM in this coming year! RB

April 19th, 2011

Hey everyone! Had to go out of town for a few days. I'll get the queue up to date, answer emails and ship out orders here ASAP...

Cheers! RB

March, 17th, 2011

Hi all! Happy St. Patty's to everyone! Just wanted to let everyone know I'm working diligently to get your gear shipped but I'm being challenged by repetitive snowstorms. I'll endeavor to get everyone's restorations shipped out ASAP as I find windows between storms to get stuff out. Hang in there...

Cheers, RB

January 20th, 2011

Hi folks! I hope everyone made it through the holidays relatively unscathed. ;-) Well, I guess I'm in a little hot water with you all since I'm so far behind on emails and all. I just want to appologize and reassure everyone that I'm just behind due to the holidays and I will be back to better communication ASAP. Meanwhile, the holidays were especially hard for me this year as you can imagine. I ended up in the ER again with a panic attack. But I'm doing ok now and back at the bench. That coupled with an insane number of orders this December and I've nearly lost all sense of order in the shop!! But I've got things roped in now and as I take care of a few loose ends from last year, you all should see a jump in the queue as it gets back on track. By all means, please let me know if I missed something on the queue or if I screwed something up. And if I ever go more than 3 or 4 days without you hearing back on an email, please resend it. I appologize if I lost your first one...

And to those at Audio Karma: All I can say is that I'm all about what I do. I am a man of my word, with honor and integrity. You won't find many who take what I do and my relationship with my customers more seriously. And it breaks my heart when I run into people who attack my credibility and honesty. For me Marantz means something more than just great audio. It's about greatness in everything you can do and who you are. It's about fidelity.

Talk soon... Rob

Update: 5/4/2011: Found this on Audio Karma:

"Thanks. Hello all! My name is Robert J. from Houston Texas. I am a new member and this is my first post. Several months ago I got “The bug” to get back into the Audio World and try and recreate my youth! My wife tells me I’m going through a mid life crises. One of the first stops I made was to this and a few other forums to find out all about vintage audio and if everybody was having a good time! Well after some research and deciding what system I was going to put together, I made Marantz my choice along with a pair of Klipsch Chorus speakers modified with Bob Crites parts. So as it went, I looked around the web on Criegslist, Audiogon and a few others and found a Marantz 2285 in what I can best describe as “Mint” Now during this process , I had the pleasure of communicating via email with Robert Bowdish from IREBUILDMARANTZ.COM found him to be very helpful with all my questions and answered his emails swiftly. So as it went, I decided to have him do the work, read his policies and completely understood the long wait, although not happy, I understood. Then I had an idea, I would buy another unit (2265B) and have somebody local to do the work faster, so I could get my “Audio fix” as my wife put it. Now for the good part, I sent my unit to him and waited, went to another local guy and gave him my other unit to fix, but not fully recondition. So,,, just before Christmas, I received an email that my unit was to be sent out that day! I contacted Rob via email and asked him to send me a final bill and I would pay for it within a few days, then the same day, I receive an email back indicating the unit was shipped with a tracking number, package and insured as I requested he do. Now if you’re all with me here, the man sent the receiver before I gave him any money… Yes that’s crazy, but he did it and I in return held up my side and paid him. Now this is not an action of somebody that is a thief or con artist is it? So you ask, did I like the service and final product, the answer would be a BIG YES. I wanted to display some photos and more about my experience, but I need to get my speakers done!"

A note to my current customers: August 7th, 2010

Hello and thanks SO much for being one of my customers! I wanted to create this note to bring you all up to date on the happenings regarding IRM.

Many of you already know that my dad has been ill for some time. He recently suffered a major stroke in July and due to the stresses on my mom, I will have to move to my parents' house. This means the IRM shop will have to move yet again.

The first thing I want to emphasize is that IRM is not going away! This is only a temporary setback and I want everyone to understand completely that their equipement is safe with me and will get restored as promised. In order to facilitate this move, I am forced to somewhat shut down IRM until further notice. The web store is now down and I won't be taking on any new work until after October 1st. Again, I appreciate your understanding and patience. During this time emails may go unanswered for a short time but I will do my best to keep in contact--current jobs especially.

And again, thank you all for the well wishes and heart-felt concern I have seen in my emails. I can't begin to thank you enough! Meanwhile, I can only ask again for your continued patience as we make what will most likely be our last move to a permanent home for IRM so we can get back on track to restoring these awesome receviers. That's the plan!

Sincerely, Robert Bowdish
